Year after year, the herds that have been under

our management the longest have better breed-

ups and produce stronger, heavier calves.

he centerpiece of our cattle business on the Chico is our Beefmaster seedstock herd, which originates from the Lasater Foundation Herd in Matheson, Colorado. These cattle are the result of a strict selection and breeding program dating back to the 1930s, which continues to develop a genetically adapted herd that lives in harmony in its natural environment.

Our Beefmaster herd was bred, born and raised on the ranch. Like their forbearers, they continue to go through a rigorous selection and breeding process that ensures only strong, hard working animals remain, strengthening the herd with each successive generation. For example, instead of visually selecting the best replacement females, we keep all our heifers and let the bulls select them in a short breeding season. The result of this management method is cattle that are calm, handle well, calve easily, breed back consistently, and thrive in their natural environment with minimal human inputs.

Our Beefmaster herd also provides the bulls that we use in our commercial cow herd. The commercial herd is our largest herd on the ranch, and consists mostly of English base stock, that are either raised on the ranch or bought elsewhere. We apply the same strict standards to our commercial herd that we do to our full Beefmasters, and the results are verifiable. Year after year, the herds that have been under our management the longest have better breed-ups and produce stronger, heavier calves.

In years when there are above normal grass conditions, we run yearlings on the ranch. Our yearlings typically originate from our own production, and spend the following winter, spring, and summer on the ranch before being entered into our grass-fed meat program or sold off the ranch. Yearlings are an important strategic tool in drought management, because they can be shipped more easily during climatic downturns to relieve pressure on the rangeland.

As part of our business plan, we identify opportunities to purchase a herd of cattle and develop them in various ways to improve their value in order to re-sell them and realize a financial gain. Examples include purchasing heifer calves and breeding them to sell as bred two year olds, or purchasing bred cows, calving them, and selling as pairs or three-in-ones. These ventures are strategically designed to be short-term in order to reduce risk while boosting our economic returns and are heavily reliant on our strong procurement, marketing, and sales network within the cattle industry.
